I am going to define mindfulness by being in the present moment. Being able to be in the here and now, and fully take this moment in. What do you see? What do you hear? What do you smell? Taking deep breaths in and out.
Here are a few quick ways to start to practice mindfulness in your everyday life. Mental grounding: -Use your sense to describe your surroundings. What do I see? What can I touch? What do I smell? -Imagine an image, and take in every detail of the image. Physical Grounding: -Run cool or warm water over your hands. -Stretch your body, and feel the way your body is moving. -Focus on your breathing. -Clench and release your fists. Soothing Grounding: -Think of favorites. What is my favorite color? Favorite animal? Seasons, time of the day... -Remember words to an inspiring song, quote or poem. -Say a coping statement: "I can handle this." Deep breathing: -Take a deep breath. Hold it in for 3-5 seconds then let it out. As you release your breath, notice how your body feels as it relaxes. You jaw starts to unclench, your shoulders start to relax. Notice this feeling as you continue to take deep breaths.
